I design in total freedom-- painting, printmaking, mark-making and using chemical alterations to create dynamic series of works on natural paper substrate. Combining techniques traditionally associated with chigiri-e, paper mosaic, and collage, I weave together texture, color, and pattern, re-imagining the original series into emotive, abstract images.
My inspiration springs from both the natural and spiritual world. I feel deeply connected to both. I have long been interested in both the psychological and spiritual implications of dreams. Symbols, icons, and patterns fascinate me, and are often included in my work. Lately, I have been creating pieces that reference storyboards. Like a never ending, ever changing tale, the images in each series are open to being interpreted, interleaved, re-configured and expanded to tell fresh stories. - Johanna Riddle
